Career paths
Joining the Environmental Council is a prestige, with all members rigorously screened by the Human Resources department to ensure only passionate and able candidates are inducted into the Council.

Members join either through class elections or by submitting an application, the successful completion of which results in induction to the EAG core. Members are led by the Environmental Student Leaders and act under the leadership council's jurisdiction and supervision.

To advance further up into the ranks of the Environmental Council, the heads of departments identify exceptional EAG core members, with the list of candidates submitted to the leadership council and internal interviews being conducted. Successful candidates are offered a post within one of the eight departments of the Environmental Council as a department member. Direct entry through application process is also organized annually. The next recruitment session is due in Term 3, with new candidates taking office in term 1 of 2019-2020 academic year.

Alternately, the Chairperson may select exceptional candidates in an expedited process, from which candidates join one of the eight departments, also as a department member.

Depending on the department, further promotion can take anywhere from a few months to several years. Some departments offer sub-division head positions, whilst others do not. The next rank up from department member is the shadow head, in which prospective leaders are made second in command of their departments. Most exceptional candidates are offered a posting as shadow to the chairperson, which prepares them to take over once the current chairperson retires. Shadow prospective are selected without notice by department heads, who consult with the Chairperson and the Leadership Council for approval.

The final rank achievable are the nine positions in the leadership council. Positions include the Chairpersonship, Directorship, Head of Finance, Head of Action, Head of Public Relations, Head of Communications, Head of Research, Head of Human Resources, Head of evaluation and Directorship of Technical Support. To hold these positions is the most prestigious opportunity in a career in the Environmental Council. All seven heads of departments are equal in status.
There are over 60 members in department position or higher, and over 100 members in all positions of the Environmental Council. A position in the Environmental Council offers not only opportunities to meet and build relationships with others interested in environmental action, but also offers invaluable opportunities to climb the ranks and lead regardless of field of expertise.
